Abstract
Since 1954 when Dr. Murray performed the first successful human kidney transplantation at Harvard Medical School, 15, 304 cases were reported by Organ Transplant Registry of American. College of Surgeons and National Institutes of Health as of November 1973. And human kidney transplantation has become a well-documented and well-accepted surgical event for the patients: with terminal chronic renal failure.
We have done 10 kidney allotransplantations in 10 patients with irreversible chronic renal failure at the Seoul National University Hospital since November 1972. All transplant recipients have been doing well with good renal function.
This report summarizes 4 kidney allotransplantations who have been living more than 10 months after transplantation with maximum follow-up of 16 months, and have resumed full normal activity. Clinical, biochemical, immunological, hematological and therapeutical features of the progress of each patient before and after transplantation are discussed, and recent general trends of human kidney transplantation are reviewed.
